5 facts you (don’t) need to know…

This infographic dates from my 2016 trip. Here are five useful points to put that walk in context.

  1. I was a beginner at long-distance walking. Weekend training walks helped me find out what the distances — and my equipment — would feel like.
  2. I took thirteen walking days. My route ran from Pforzheim to Weil am Rhein, close to Basel, with overnight stops arranged around the trip I had booked.
  3. I chose the western variant. The Feldberg, Belchen and Blauen were among its high points, in both senses.
  4. I stayed in hotels. My main luggage travelled separately. A daypack was enough to keep me occupied on the climbs.
  5. The first packing list was not the final answer. Training and the journey itself taught me what earned its place in the bag. The German packing articles include those lessons.
